4 World Records in February 2020

This week, we have seen 4 world records in February 2020. It was even 5, because in the Pole Vault, Duplantis beat the world record twice in one week. Here are the records

Pole Vault – Armand Duplantis – 6m17 & 6m18

Armand Dupantis is in great shape and beat twice the indoor pole vault world record.

Armand “Mondo” Duplantis started 2020 off with a win on the 04th of February 2020 in Düsseldorf, Germany with 6.00 meters. He finished the meeting with an attempt to the world record (currently Renaud Lavillenie with 6.16 meters, on 15 February 2014, in Donetsk, Ukraine). He barely missed at 6.17 meters.

On the 8th of February, this time Duplantis was able to jump over 6.17 meters in Torun Poland. It is a new Pole Vault World record.

Pole Vault World record

Just one week later, Duplantis, broke again his own record in Glasgow, on the 15th of Februry, with a jump over 6.18 meters.

With his 20 years old, some further progress is possible!

Road 5km – Joshua Cheptegei – 12’51”

Joshua Cheptegei from Ugandan smashed the 5K world record on Sunday the 16th of Februry at the Monaco Run 5K. His time of 12:51 bested the previous record by 27 seconds.

Cheptegei set the (now broken) 10 km world record in December and won the 10,000 meters on the track at the IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar.

During the same race, the French runners beat the national records:
Liv Westphal won the women’s race in 15’31”, a French national record.
Jimmy Gressier of France was second in 13’18”, to break the European and the French record of 13’29” set by Julien Wanders in this race last year.



Triple Jump Indoor – Yulimar Rojas – 15.43 meters

Yulimar Rojas has been jumping very well during this indoor season. In Madrid, on the 21st of February 2020, Yulimar jumped new world record with 15.43 meters.

The Olympic silver medallist jumped 15.43m, beating the old indoor world record jumped in March 2004 by Tatyana Lebedeva. Here is the video of the jump:

Half Marathon – Ababel Yeshaneh – 1:04’31”

Another record on this Friday 21st of Februaryin the Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon, in the United Arab Emirates. Ababel Yeshaneh from Ethiopia ran the fastest 21.1 kilometer in history by winning 1:04’31”.

The old record was 1:04’51” set by Joyciline Jepkosgei in Valencia in 2017.

In the race Brigid Kosgei was second in 1:04’49” as well under the old world record time. Brigid is the current marathon world record holder in 2h14′. In Chicago, during the marathon world record race, Yeshneh was second and ran a Personal Best in 2h20′.

In setting the record, Yeshaneh averaged 4’55” per mile during the half marathon. She also won a hefty prize purse of more than $100,000 for winning the women’s race and breaking the course and world records.
